Fulbright Brainstorms 2004 – New Trends in Higher Education

Organized by the Fulbright Commission in cooperation with the Luso-American Foundation and sponsored by ETS (Educational Testing Service) Europe, the third edition of the Fulbright Brainstorms was opened by Rui Machete, President of the Luso-American Foundation, João M. Ecsodi, Counselor for Public Affairs of the US Embassy and Chairman of the Fulbright Commission’s Board of Directors, and António Morão Dias, Director-General for Higher Education.

After two successful editions, maintaining the high-quality level of the panels and a big audience seemed an even bigger task than before. Yet, the third edition of the Fulbright Brainstorms was a successful initiative, attracting even a record-breaking audience of 120 people in the first day and over 60 in its second day (a beautiful hot sunny, mind you), which included distinguished professors and researchers, universities’ administrative officers, government representatives in the area of higher education policy, students and journalists

Gathering several key scholars in the field of Higher Education, such as Peter Magrath, Judith Eaton, Bruce Johnstone, Ulrich Teichler, Peter Maassen, Josep Bricall and Guy Neave, among others, the Fulbright Brainstorms 2004 addressed burning issues on higher education policies – funding, mobility, governance – during the two-day forum, held September 24-25, at the Luso-American Foundation’s Auditorium, in Lisbon.

Following the opening session was the keynote address, a sharp analysis of New Trends in US higher education, delivered by C. Peter Magrath, President of the U.S. National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges.  During the afternoon sessions of this first day two panels discussed mobility of staff and students, and the internationalization of higher education.

The second day of the conference included even more controversial issues: multiculturalism, relations between institutions and governments, and higher education funding.

Once again, the role of the Fulbright Brainstorms’ Scientific Committee, this year composed of Eduardo Marçal Grilo, Board Member of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and Alberto Amaral, Director of the Center for Research on Higher Education Policy, was crucial to the success of this initiative. Thus, the Fulbright Commission takes this opportunity to, once more, express its gratitude to Eduardo Marçal Grilo and Alberto Amaral for their brilliant guidance and support.

Detailed information on the Fulbright Brainstorms 2004, including the papers presented by the speakers, are available at the Commission’s website.
